About Vordan Karmir
Vordan Karmir (Որդան Կարմիր), meaning “red worm” in Armenian, is a historic natural red dye made from an insect native to the Ararat Valley. For centuries, its brilliant crimson was used in Armenian carpets, textiles, and illuminated manuscripts.
Today, the Armenian cochineal (Porphyrophora hamelii) is critically endangered, and its natural habitat has greatly diminished. The original dye is no longer readily available.
